A method andapparatus for assistingvoice-dialing using amodel of an individual'scalling behavior to improverecognition of an inputname corresponding to adesired telephone number.When the individual picksup a telephone, activityis initiated in a neuralnetwork model of theindividual's calling behaviorthat predicts the likelihoodthat different numberswill be called, given suchpredictors as the day of theweek and the time of day.The model is constructedby training the neuralnetwork with data from theuser's history of makingand receiving telephonecalls. The auditory outputfrom an automatic speechrecognition system and theoutput from the user modelare integrated together so as to select the number that is most likely to bethe number desired by the speaker. The system can also provideautomatic directory assistance by speaking the number aloud rather thandialing it. In one version, the system is a personal directory foran individual maintained on that individual's personal computer. In anotherversion, the system serves as a directory for a given physicalor virtual site, with information about the institutional organization at thesite in addition to individual calling histories used to trackcalling patterns and make predictions about the likelihood of calls within thesite.
