The present invention is within the fields of human origins, medicine and evolutionary biology. More precisely, the invention relates to a method and kit for determining the geographic or population origin of a human based on mitochondrial DNA sequences and specifically to the use of mitochondrial DNA variants (polymorphisms) from the complete human mitochondrial genome. This information is employed in the comparison of biological samples with samples of known origin or with a database of mitochondrial genome sequences./SDOAB
