POINT OF USE DIGITAL ELECTRIC ENERGY MEASUREMENT, CONTROL AND MONITORING APPARATUS

A point of use digital electric energy measurment, control and monitoring apparatus includes an automatic reader (34) coupled to a customer site (18, 19) electrical service. The automatic reader (34) monitors electric energy supplied to the customer site, calculates power consumption values and transmits the power values via a communication network to a remote reporting site (10). Tamper detection and out-of-specification energy supply features are included in the reader. Remote communication between the reader and the reporting site uses Internet TCP/IP protocol for worldwide Internet wireless communication. A modem (20) couples the automatic reader to the user site telephone network. Controls provide uninterrupted telephone service to the customer regardless of on going data communication between the reader and the reporting site.
