The invention relates to a holding device (4) for a camera and to a method for detecting the environment of a vehicle with at least one camera. Said method enables the holding device to extend out of the vehicle body if required. The holding device is extended depending on a speed signal or a gear setting signal and has another device in addition to the camera, especially a windscreen-washing device or a trunk grip. The holding device can also be extended depending on a signal from an operating element. Holding devices with cameras can be mounted in different positions on the vehicle.
