The controller (7) includes a switch controlling the direction of running. It detects the externally-selected direction of running from the phase shift between measured voltages on the first and second lines (8, 9), during a short testing interval, when switch-on occurs. Motor starting is prevented, in the event that the motor is at the end of its travel, with respect to the selected running direction.
