A hydrophobic carrier material supporting a reactant which is bonded by hydrophobic interactions (van der Walls forces) is used for solid phase chemical reactions. A solid phase chemical reaction is carried out by the non-covalent hydrophobic bonding of a reactant (substrate) to a hydrophobic carrier material and reaction of the bonded reactant with one or more other reagents in solution.
