A light or laser-light beam (2) directed by a moving head (8), successively illuminates locations (52) to be measured or marked. Units connected to a controller determine each alt-azimuth- (y, x) angle and range (z) between source and position (52). Direction (orientation) of the beam onto the positions, or the measurement of these directions, is effected relative to the angular co-ordinates, based on measured range. The light point formed by the incident beam at each respective position is used as a marking.
