The piston pump (10) has at least two inlet valves (28, 30, 32) which are parallel to each other in the hydraulic circuit. One of these (28) is in the piston and the other (30) is in the pump casing. The pump may be a stepped piston pump. One or more of the valves may be a no-return valve.
