Determining the condition of hair comprising tensioning a partial section of a hair sample until the sample tears and determining the force required to tear the hair, determining the length by which the partial section of the hair sample is elongated at the point of tearing, and comparing the values with corresponding theoretical values, is new. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process comprising two fixing units for fixing the hair samples so that the distance between the units can be varied, an electromotor by which the hair sample can be lengthened, a sensor for measuring the force required to lengthen the sample, and a container from which a liquid is applied to the fixed hair sample.
