Method for the prediction of collisions and their avoidance in which information from a sensor system that observes the surroundings of a motor vehicle is evaluated while the vehicle is still in a normal driving state. The evaluation involves determining the probability of an accident if the traffic situation stays as it is and if it is determined that there is a danger for a participant, e.g. a pedestrian, a warning is generated. The warning can be either sounding of the horn or a light signal. An Independent claim is made for a device for predicting and avoiding accidents in a traffic situation.
