A filter comprises a filter chamber (15), and filter plates (14) arranged in the filter and covering the inner cross-sectional area of the filter chamber. The plates are double-walled with two filtering walls (17) which form an inner chamber (18). The path of the exhaust gas and/or exhaust gas stream leads from the filter chamber through the filtering walls into the inner chamber of the plates and out of the filter. An electrical heating device (25) is arranged between the filtering walls to heat the filter plates to above 550[deg]C to burn off soot which adheres to the filtering walls. An independent claim is also included for burning off soot in an exhaust gas filter of an IC engine. Preferred Features: The filtering walls and the electrical heating device are flat with the heating device spanning the plates and/or walls. The heating device has heating elements which form half of the device. The heating device is a foil made from iron, chromium or aluminum.
