The package which comprises a base, lid and four side walls is opened by a separating cut running round at least three side walls. The package is passed with its base resting on the conveyor along past three cutting tools in succession whereby the tools each have a fixed vertical spacing from the conveyor and each produce a separating cut round one sidewall. The depth of the separating cut can be varied by controlling the lift of the cutting tool in dependence on different materials and thicknesses.
