Method for producing an embossing roller made of silicone rubber for continuously embossing the surface of a thermoplastic film, the embossing surface having a negative shape of a surface structure to be embossed, in particular a grain. An auxiliary roller is first produced, which consists of plastic at least in the area of its peripheral surface. A laser beam is directed onto the smooth peripheral surface, which is moved relative to the peripheral surface and is controlled in accordance with the respective location of the surface structure of a real or imaginary template present as data, such that the surface structure of the template is generated as a positive shape in the peripheral surface , A uniformly thick layer of silicone rubber is poured or spread onto this peripheral surface of the auxiliary roller and vulcanized to form an embossing daughter, which is pulled off the peripheral surface, turned inside out and glued with the negatively structured embossing surface to the outside on a peripheral surface of an embossing roller. After a single structuring of the surface of an auxiliary roller, the method enables multiple embossing daughters to be created by a simple, time-saving and inexpensive casting process.
