The device uses 2 ultrasonic transceivers (6a,6b) attached to the tractor vehicle (1), a cooperating passive reflector (9) attached to the coupling (4) and a second passive reflector (10) attached to the trailer vehicle (2). An onboard computer (8) evaluates the ultrasonic echo signals received from both reflectors, for determining the angle of the trailer vehicle longitudinal axis relative to the tractor vehicle longitudinal axis and the angle of the coupling longitudinal axis relative to the tractor vehicle longitudinal axis.
