The navigation procedure uses data associated with multimedia files to enable the navigator software to select a group of documents similar to that which is being currently viewed. The selection may be listed on screen, and this listing may be updated in the light of a new current selection made by the user. The procedure provides navigation through a set of multi-media documents with the aid of a user interface - the navigator. A current document is selected, then the navigator exploits the descriptive data read from the document, and determines groups of documents having descriptive data with similarity to that of the current document. The navigator presents these groups on a screen and places them according to their similarity to the current document. The user makes a selection from the one group, and then another, with the navigator recalculating the groups each time the current document is changed.
