PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a width control fire grate which enables easy control of the gap between fire grates, a step stoker employing the same, and a method for controlling the gap between the fire grates in the step stoker.;SOLUTION: Fixed and movable fire grates L11, L12 are constituted, respectively, of a plurality of fixed and movable fire grates 11, 12, which are arranged without gaps therebetween in the horizontal direction, and the single width control fire grate 13 which is disposed in the vicinity of the center position. Left and right side grates 31 are each provided with a horizontal portion 31A that extends in the horizontal direction and a vertical portion 31B that extends in the vertical direction from one side edge of the horizontal portion 31A, with a spacer 32 being located between the vertical portions 31B, the whole of which being integrally joined together by a fastener 33.
