PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide both a photochromic compound having good transparency and reversible photochromism and capable of controlling an optical signal with a high efficiency and a photochromic thin film using the same compound.;SOLUTION: This compound is obtained by attaching various substituents, especially a substituent having a sterically bulky structure to a diarylethene derivative reversibly changing colors by irradiation with ultraviolet rays, inhibiting crystallization and enabling random dispersion of the molecule.
