PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a remaining tape detector which can always provide accurate information of a remaining tape. ;SOLUTION: A first remaining tape acquisition means 115, at first operation mode (continuous tape running mode), acquires the remaining tape of a tape-type recording medium through an optional operation. A second remaining tape acquisition means 116, at the second operation mode (intermittent recording mode), acquires remaining tape of the tape-type recording medium 101, by interpolating the remaining tape information acquired by the first remaining tape acquisition means 115.
