In the present invention there is disclosed a device for producing a spray or stream of electrically charged particles, said device comprising means defining a location from which said spray or stream is generated and a high voltage generator (28) for producing high voltage between said location and the surroundings, wherein the invention is characterized in that the generator (28) comprises a large, solid state, array (78) of discrete radiation sensitive voltage producing elements (100) interconnected to produce a high voltage. A process for producing the above indicated high voltage generator (28) comprised in the above device comprises making a large, solid state, array of discrete radiation sensitive voltage producing elements (100) arranged within a matrix and interconnected with conductive tracks (150R, 150C).
