The actuator for a fire extinguisher has a cylinder (12) receiving a sliding piston (14) and a lever (10) between the piston and valve rod (4). The lever is pivotably between an installation position in which it does not engage the valve rod and a released position in which the lever engages the valve rod to open the valve. The piston has a push surface(43) to cooperate with the lever, which can be actuated by a pyrotechnic charge.
