Production of mineral fertilizers (I), in powder, prill, compacted or granule form and containing nitrification inhibitor(s) (II), by applying a solution or suspension of (II) to (I) in a compact mixer or the inlet of a compact mixer. Production of mineral fertilizers (I), in powder, prill, compacted or granule form and containing nitrification inhibitor(s) (II), by applying a solution or suspension of (II) to (I) in a mixer, is carried out in a compact mixer (or the inlet of a compact mixer) with: (1) mobile mixing elements driven at a maximum peripheral velocity of 10 m/seconds; (2) a gap between the mixing elements and the mixer wall at least as large as the maximum particle diameter of (I); and (3) an average residence time of 15-300 seconds. An Independent claim is also included for the use of a compact mixer as above for the production of (I).
