A vehicle driven along the road section is provided with a sensor for measuring the vibrations and this is used to create a response profile. An estimated response profile is created, based on a simulation of a vehicle model being driven over the measured unevenness profile. The difference between the measured and estimated response profiles indicates variations in the load carrying capacity of the road surface along that section of road.
