An improvement in strains of streptomyces is achieved by using biosynthetic genes of clavulanic acid, increasing production of the antibiotic in the producing-micro-organism Streptomyces clavuligerus. The procedure includes a method for isolating a region of DNA of Streptomyces clavuligerus which contains 11 genes (psy, claA, claB, claC, claD, claE, claG, claF, claH, claI and claJ), which form part of the grouping of biosynthetic genes of clavulanic acid. These genes are expressed in the producing micro-organism Streptomyces clavuligerus of clavulanic acid, obtaining an increase in the production of the antibiotic. The 11 genes codify for proteins related to resistance and biosynthesis of clavulanic acid, oxidative processes and regulating mechanisms of secondary metabolism.
