PURPOSE: A styrene-butadiene-based latex for coating paper, a paper coating composition containing the latex and the paper prepared by coating the composition are provided, to improve the flowability and the stability of the latex by employing a copolymerizable ion monomer. CONSTITUTION: The styrene-butadiene-based latex comprises 0.01-10 wt% of sodium methallyl sulfonate as an ion monomer capable of copolymerizing with other monomers constituting latex. The latex comprises 5-55 wt% of 1,3-butadiene, 40-94 wt% of styrene, 1-15 wt% of an ethylenically unsaturated acid monomer, 0-10 wt% of cyano vinyl monomer, 0-30 wt% of other copolymerizable vinyl-based monomers and 0.2-10 wt% of a molecular weight controlling agent. Preferably the gel content of the latex is 30-95 %; and the molecular weight controlling agent is n-dodecyl mercaptan or t-dodecyl mercaptan.
