The method involves detection and measurement of a microwave signal escaping from an orifice positioned in the wall of the cavity or on the waveguide supplying the cavity, conversion of the escaping microwave signal into an electrical signal and inferring the presence and/or nature of the product placed in the microwave cavity by comparison of the signal level obtained with that of the reference signal.
