The aim of the invention is to create a low-wear grate cooler having a high conveying capacity, a high efficiency and a fixed cooling grate (11), above which a number of rows of conveying elements (14) are arranged transversal to the direction of conveyance of the product to be cooled, and these conveying elements are driven from underneath the cooling grate. To this end, the invention provides that the conveying elements (14) are displaced in a controlled manner between a forward stoke position and a return stroke position either individually and/or in groups via push rods (15) that are located in the direction of conveyance of the product to be cooled. Said push rods (15) are each guided through a sleeve (16) that passes through the cooling grate (11).
