PURPOSE: A system and a method for controlling the level of melted glass in a glass melter are provided, to minimize the amount of impurities in the melted glass, thereby to improve the quality of the molded glass. CONSTITUTION: A level controlling system comprises a level detecting part (10) which measures the level of melted glass in a refining part (103) and inputs the measured value to a control part (417); and a control part (417) which controls the level of melted glass in the refining part (103) based on the input value from the level detecting part (10). The level detecting part (10) comprises a detector bar (1) which is inserted into the upper part of melted glass of the refining part (103); a supporting stand (3) which supports the detector bar (1); and a fluid supplying part which supplies the cool fluid for the detector bar (1). The method comprises the steps of detecting the level of melted glass based on the distance to the upper surface of the melted glass contained in the glass melter; and controlling the amount of source supply to a source supplying part according to the level detecting signal.
