The method involves using at least four transmission-free standards, i.e. reflection standards, as well as at least one transmission standard. Eight of 16 error terms describing transmission and reflection errors are calculated using four calibration equations of the transmission and transmission-free standards. Eight error terms describing a crosstalk are calculated with the help of the remaining at least eight calibration equations. The method involves calibrating a vector network analyzer comprising two measuring gates and four measuring points according to a 15 term error model, in which several calibration standards are connected in lieu of the measuring object successively in arbitrary sequence with both measuring gates. Calibration equations are derived from the calibration measurements, and 16 error terms are determined from the calibration equations, which are used in a following object measurement for a system error correction. At least four transmission-free standards, i.e. reflection standards, as well as at least one transmission standard are used for the calibration. Eight of the 16 error terms which describe the transmission- and reflection errors, are calculated with the help of four calibration equations of the transmission standard, as well as at least four calibration equations of the transmission-free standards, and the eight error terms describing a crosstalk are calculated with the help of the remaining at least eight calibration equations.
