The device has a number of light emitting diodes (1) as the light source arranged adjacent to each other to illuminate an object (2) e.g. tube or pipe, opposite the surface (3) occupied by the light emitting diodes. The surface has a concave curvature, at least over part of its extent. It can be curved in a semicircular shape in a cross-section in one dimension and extend in a tunnel shape perpendicular to the plane of curvature.
