This paper presents an investigation of the optimization of the light reflector angle of top-view (TV) packaging (PKG) of a surface-mount-device (SMD) light-emitting diode (LED) using ray-tracing simulations. The light extraction efficiency which is the total relative intensity of the rays emitted from the PKG, is used for the evaluation index of the output performance of the PKG. The cavity angles composing the light reflectors of TV PKG with round and square-shaped cavity are optimized on the basis of the optical design method proposed in our previous study. In addition, the optimal angles under the conditions where the mold resin contains a phosphor affecting the light extraction efficiency intensively, are investigated. Finally, we suggest important factors for designing the light reflector (cavity) angle of TV LED PKG.
