A textile machine has a work station at which yarn is wound onto a spool (12), and a detector monitoring the spool diameter (d). The detector has a signaling device (19) esp. linked via geared levers (I, L, 21) to a moving arm (10). A deflection of the arm through an angle (alpha one) results in a larger deflection (alpha two) of the signaling device (19). The measured value signaling device (19) is an incremental unit which signals the spool diameter to a control unit (30) which combines this information with the spooling duration, yarn length to calculate the spool diameter and varies the machine operating parameters accordingly and terminates the operation on reaching a pre-determined target diameter. The actual diameter (d) provides the control system with a reference value to calculate the spool diameter at other work stations.
