Packet to be coded is placed on support rack plate (7) with tape (52) tying packet together lying over security strip (9). Aligning unit with try square (1) is driven by motor (25) to move along column (6) to align packet. Lever arm (11) is engaged and driven by motor (18) towards plate (7) and heated wedge on arm codes packet through the bars of rack. Depth of browning by wedge is set by adjusting (8) height of plate (7). The coding is manually selected using the keys (14) or is selected electronically (27). Heating of wedge is set according to type of paper to be coded and height of plate (7) is adjusted to allow different depths of browning of paper by heated wedge.
