A safety interlock for a PTO powered wood splitter has a safety cover hinged on the machine and with a shaft (20) attached to the cover near to its hinge mounting (16). The free end of the shaft is locate into the machine housing and is blocked by the PTO shaft. The cover can only be released if the PTO shaft is uncoupled and pulled out of the machine. The cover also blocks the opening of a second cover (10) for improved access to the cutting/splitting mechanism.
