The dynamic control of the beam width of a car headlamp has a sensor(2) to ascertain the distance of a vehicle in front, travelling in the same or opposite directions, working on the transmitter/receiver principle. This distance is used as a control variable for adjusting the headlamp without the need for an imaging screen within a certain range of the initial adjustment. The speed and acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle in front are also determined. Further sensors measure other relevant vehicle parameters and which can be used as disturbance variables for the control signal. The unit producing this signal is linked by a serial data bus(7) to other control systems i.e. electronic accelerator pedal, braking unit and engine management (8 to 10).
