The invention concerns a method for upgrading waste ballast comprising the following steps: a) recuperating the waste ballast of a railway track; b) sorting said ballast through a first screen (30), and recuperating that part of the ballast with size distribution range substantially identical or slightly higher than that of the new ballast; c) passing said ballast part through a shock processing machine (200) so as to shape the sharp edges by removing the splinters thereof in the least resistant places on the stones constituting it; d) recuperating the treated ballast, and sorting it in a second screen (80) so as to retain the part with size distribution range substantially identical with that the new ballast selected range; e) and before and/or after step d), conveying the ballast to a vibrating sieve (12) to eliminate dust particles.
