Production of a mixture of compounds including at least one mono-alkylbenzene from the group of 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-phenylalkanes by alkylation of benzene with a mono-olefin comprising at least 2 C atoms. The reaction is effected using 12-tungstophosphoric acid and/or 12-tungstomolybdic acid as catalyst, deposited on a support of high surface area and porous volume and containing mainly zirconium oxide.
