The mechanism, in which the parking brake is operated by a piston (14) moving in a cylinder (26) and actuated by a cable (10), has balls (20, 32) or rollers on the cable that interact with a ramp (16) connected to the piston. The ramp has curved surfaces (22) lying at an oblique angle to the piston and forming part of a cylinder or sphere that moves together with the piston.
