PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively suppress excessive temperature rise of a catalyst due to cutting fuel. PSOLUTION: When a fuel injection amount qcal is less than the minimum permissible injection amount QIMIN during a suction stroke injection, the fuel injection method is switched from a suction stroke injection to a compression stroke injection, and combustion is continued until the fuel injection amount qcal becomes smaller. The executing frequency of cutting fuel leading to an excessive supply of oxygen and temperature rise of the catalyst is reduced, thereby suppressing excessive temperature rise of the catalyst.
