PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element having a periodic structure (photonic band structure) in which the refractive index periodically varies, wherein the periodic structure can be controlled with a simple construction, a mirror having the optical element, an optical deflector, and a method of controlling the optical element.;SOLUTION: The optical element has a periodic structure in which the refractive index is periodically distributed and a deforming part which is mechanically deformed by an external action. The deforming part is composed integrally with the periodic structure along the periodic direction of the periodic structure and in a manner that the periodicity of the periodic structure is varied by being deformed in the periodic direction of the periodic structure. The periodicity of the periodic structure (photonic band structure) in which the refractive index periodically varies is controlled with a simple constitution.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
