PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new catalyst for olefin polymerization by using a ligand to be simply prepared and to provide a method for producing a polymer using the catalyst.;SOLUTION: The catalyst for olefin polymerization is obtained by reacting a compound represented by formula (1) (R1-R5 are each a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group, an aralkyl group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, an aralkyloxy group, a hydrocarbon-substituted silyl group or a hydrocarbon-substituted amino group; A is an atom of the group 16 of the periodic table of the elements; R1 and R2, R2 and R3 and R4 and R5 may be bonded to form cyclic structures) with a base, reacting the reaction product with a transition metal compound represented by general formula (2) (M is a transition metal atom of the group 3 to 11 of the periodic table of the elements; X is an anionic ligand; L is an organic ligand; m and n are each 0-6) to give a transition metal complex and combining the transition metal complex with an aluminum compound.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
