A digital cross connect system is provided that includes a switch matrixsubsystem (100) comprising a plurality of switch matrix units (101 to 106) ina CLOS arrangement in multiple stages. The digital cross connect system alsoincludes a plurality of subsystem input ports (108) associated with the switchmatrix subsystem (100) and a plurality of subsystem output ports (110)associated with the switch matrix subsystem (100). In addition, the digitalcross connect system includes switch matrix unit programming that instructsthe switch matrix units (101 to 106) to generate specific internal cross-connections that allow one or more input signals present at one or moresubsystem input ports (108) to be connected to one or more subsystem outputports (110).
