The invention relates to the use of a polypeptide with the biological activity of an NADH-dependent cytochrome b5 reductase (E.C. 1.6.2.2), which when absent causes growth retardation and chlorotic foliage and is coded by the nucleic acid sequence SEQ ID NO:1 or functional equivalents of the aforementioned nucleic acid sequence, as a target for herbicides. Within this scope, functional equivalents of SEQ ID NO:1 are provided. The invention also relates to the use of the polypeptide with the biological activity of an NADH-dependent cytochrome b5 reductase in a method for identifying compounds with a herbicidal action, which inhibit NADH-dependent cytochrome b5 reductase. The invention further relates to the use of the compounds, which have been identified by the method, as herbicides.
