To protect the cell against voltage surges the housing (2) is directly connected, via a conductor (10), to the shielding (9) of the connection cable (4). A cable connection unit (5) has voltage surge diverters in the form of gas discharge strips (15, 16) connected to earth. Thus a cable connection (6) to a measurement and analysis unit (7) is similarly protected.
