PURPOSE: Provided is a cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery, which has high stability and capacity, and gives excellent rate characteristics, charge/discharge efficiency and high temperature storage characteristics. CONSTITUTION: The cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery comprises a composite oxide represented by the general formula of LiaNibCocBadAleOx, wherein a/(b+c) = 1.0-1.2, b/(b+c) = 0.5-0.95, c/(b+c) = 0.05-0.5, d/(b+c) = 0.0005-0.01, e/(b+c) = 0.01-0.1, b+c = 1, and x is not specified. The composite oxide powder particles may have an amorphous phase of oxide dispersed therein and/or formed on the surface thereof. The oxide in the amorphous phase is an oxide of at least one element selected from the group consisting of Li, Ba and Al.
