PURPOSE: A sialic acid-specific lectin protein prepared from Paecilomyces japonica, a process for preparing the same and the use thereof are provided, which sialic acid-specific lectin protein is used as a reagent for carbohydrate-related studies based on its N-acetylneuramic acid recognizing principle, and for diagnosis of diseases associated with distribution change of N-acetylneuramic acid, and is used as a carrier protein for delivery of drug into a local area and an inhibitor for growth of cancer cells. CONSTITUTION: The sialic acid-specific lectin protein, PJA(Paecilomyces japonica agglutinin) protein, is prepared from Paecilomyces japonica, and consists of single subunit with molecular weight of 16.0 kDa, wherein PJA protein specifically binds to N-acetylneuramic acid or N-acetylneuramic acid containing glycoprotein. The process for preparing the PJA protein comprises the steps of: finely chopping Paecilomyces japonica; adding NaCl solution into chopped Paecilomyces japonica and filtering the mixture; and subjecting the filtered solution to fetuin-affinity chromatography.
