PURPOSE: A display device and a projection type display device and a driving circuit and a driving method of the display device are provided to emphasize contrast by adjusting brightness of images according to an image signal. CONSTITUTION: A counter electrode control circuit(6) has an average gray level calculation unit(6a) and a variable signal adjustment unit(6b) and sets a counter electrode signal(CDATA) on the ground of an image signal(DATA). The average gray level calculation unit calculates an average gray level(Gf) of the image signal per unit hour, and detects the brightness of the image displayed in one frame. The variable signal adjustment unit comprises an adjustment table(6d) having a relation between the average gray level and a variable signal, and sets the variable signal on the ground of the average gray level calculated by the average gray level calculation unit. The variable signal adjustment unit adds the set variable signal to an initial signal(S0), and then supplies it to a counter electrode driver as the counter electrode signal.
