Method has the following steps: an excitation area on the surface of the body is exposed to energetic radiation with time varying intensity; the energy response of the body to the time varying excitation is measured in terms of intensity and-or phase displacement; a multiplicity of such measurements are made for different times; a phase or intensity profile is determined; a hardness profile is determined using a neuronal network; and a transfer function is numerically determined for different theoretical hardness profiles and-or comparison samples with predetermined hardness profiles. An Independent claim is made for a device for determining hardness profiles of energy absorbing solid bodies.
