In a process to filter soot particles from diesel engine exhaust gases, the exhaust gases pass through an exhaust pipe system (4) which esp. also incorporates a NOx storage unit (44). The NOx unit is integrated within a particle filter (45) as a storage system which is pre-positioned before the filter. The NOx storage unit has a ceramic substrate incorporating NOx - binding agents and an electrical heating system. The exhaust system further incorporates an oxidation catalytic converter (47). Also claimed is a commensurate exhaust system incorporating a selective catalytic reduction unit.
