The method involves determining the instantaneous driving resistance from the instantaneous engine state and effective transmission ratio, storing characteristic fields of driving resistance, engine speed and gearbox ratio and determining the highest ratio for which an increase in instantaneous engine speed can be achieved under high power requirements for at least one defined positive acceleration or power reserve from the characteristic fields.
