The method involves manual operation of a shift lever movable in a superimposed H gate to shift the main and group gearboxes with a locking device inhibiting selection of forbidden ratios and an electronic controller. The gears of the group gearbox are automatically shifted by the electronic controller depending on the output and/or engine revolution rate and shift lever selection movement along shift lanes (6a-6c) of the superimposed H gate (7). AN Independent claim is also included for the following: a shifting arrangement, especially for implementing the inventive method.
